Last week, I flew 81 Galacticos into Nashville. It was our offsite—a day to plan, get sharp, and punch some holes in our own assumptions.
We do something at these events called Galactic Shark Tank. It’s exactly what it sounds like: the team brings ideas, and a panel of sharks decides whether they sink or swim. No mercy, no fluff, just bold pitches and honest feedback.
But that’s not what this blog is about.
After one of the sessions, one of our guest sharks pulled me aside and said something I can’t shake:
“Bruce, I’m kind of jealous. Your team is so damn engaged. I want that. But I don’t know how to build it.”
Now, this wasn’t a compliment. It was a concern. And it hit a nerve.
Because when it comes to cybersecurity, every single person on your team matters. Not just your IT lead. Not just your compliance manager. Everyone. From the receptionist to the CFO.
You’ve heard the phrase, “You’re only as strong as your weakest link,” right?
I don’t buy that anymore.
I think you’re only as strong as your least engaged person.
Because the least engaged person is the one who’s going to click the link.
They’re the one who’s going to ignore the phishing training.
They’re the one who’s going to upload the sensitive file to the wrong folder, or worse—ask ChatGPT to “help rewrite” your private contract.
Not because they’re dumb. But because they’re disconnected. Disengaged. Just collecting a paycheck and hoping no one notices. And that? That’s your next breach.
So today’s a challenge.
Ask yourself:
- How are you engaging your team?
- How do you make them want to show up and fight for the mission?
- Are you building a culture where security is part of the DNA—or a side dish that only gets served once a quarter?
It’s leadership. It’s culture. It’s mission. That’s the trifecta. You want fewer clicks on bad links? Build a company people are proud to be part of. You want fewer security gaps? Give your people a reason to care. You want a business that survives the next wave of breaches, lawsuits, and AI-driven nonsense?
Start by building a team that actually gives a damn.
Because the truth is, your security checklist doesn’t start with a firewall. It starts with you. Then it extends to your people.
The firewall? That’s on page 14.
